Solving a Rubik’s cube

Ok, so this isn’t really affiliate related, but having played with one of these yesterday for the first time since childhood, I’m finding myself unable to put it down! I remember when I was little that I couldn’t solve it at all, other than getting one face the same colour, and I have to admit that nothing has changed!

Having spent a good couple of hours trying to solve it, I eventually resorted to Google… Some might call it cheating but I’d say it’s being resourceful! I certainly couldn’t have done that 15 years ago!

I discovered a fantastic site during my ‘research’, which allows you to get to the solved cube from ANY position (assuming you haven’t taken the stickers off and re-arranged them!).

There is a fantastic video on Videojug too, which shows you how to solve one, and it’s fantastic. I’ve yet to try it out, but I can follow it visualising a cube so it should be easy to follow!

How do you lose $60 in 3 days?

The short answer? By promoting an offer for a retailer where the average basket spend is about $20, with a 10% commission rate, and spending between $0.05 and $0.30 per click. Oops.

I’ve just been trying an offer on Facebook, promoting yogaaccessories.com through Commission Junction. I thought, being quite a targetted niche, it could be quite profitable. Either I’m doing something drastically wrong, or I’m just wrong!

I set up a few adverts, to split test (see, I have learnt something!), and have had fairly good results in terms of getting my CPC down, and keeping my CTR up (well, higher than anything I’ve had before anyway).

As you can see, the above campaigns (slightly edited to remove my differences in the names for split testing), show that I’m paying between $0.08 and $0.51 on average per click. I’ve paused them all now, so that they aren’t running, as well as pausing the campaign! There are over 500 clicks there, at a cost of just over $60 (probably nearer $65!), meaning an average cost per click of $0.30, or slightly under. Now, with 500 clicks, I’m imagine I’d have received a fair few sales. Well, check this out…

A new affiliate beginning

How do new affiliates get started in this industry? This is something that I’ve been wondering about for a while now, and been trying to make happen for the past few months. I’ve attempted PPC campaigns with Google, setting up an information site, and even resorted to advertising on Facebook!

At the moment, it’s not going well, and to be honest, I’m feeling disheartened. I’ve had some success with campaigns - almost breaking even anyway! I’ll try and break down what I’ve done so far in this post.

Google

Initially I was direct linking to a few offers, one of which was LavaLife (US Dating), but I made the mistake of using their display URL so had to stop very quickly. After changing it to one that didn’t exist (don’t know why I did that, but Google didn’t seem to care!), I found that although I was paying in the region of 30p ($0.60ish) per click, each sale made enough to cover everything. I spent around £50 and made £45 back in a month (so again, really poor!).

A few more Google campaigns later, and I’m definitely into the negative cashflow area! Not good!

Developed Sites

The next area I tried was to create a site comparing pre-paid credit cards. I figured that this is an expanding area so thought it might be something that would be popular. Without any PPC, I got around 4/5 visitors a day from search engines - not enough to get any clicks or conversions! With PPC, this rose to 50/60 a day, but again, still not enough to cover my costs. Anyone got any ideas?

Facebook

This has kind of been my most successful venture, but only just! Payday UK loans were promoted at one point and returned £40 CPA, which, despite spending about £75, meant I was £5 in profit after 2 signups!

Having read around, following more advice, I decided to try a traditional commission based offer, promoting an online retailer. I’m currently promoting yogaaccessories.com (through CJ), and despite having got my clicks down to less than $0.05 each, and having sent over 500 clicks through in the last 3 days, I seem to have made only $2.50 in commission. Very disheartening!

Anyway, I suppose I should be off to do more research and learning!
